INDIAN INSTITUTE FOR SUSTAINABLE ENTERPRISE

INDIAN INSTITUTE FOR SUSTAINABLE ENTERPRISE

Transformation to sustainability is the biggest business challenge–and opportunity–in the history of capitalism. World population has grown 3 times in approximately 60 years. United Nations projects the world population to reach 10 billion by 2100! Most of the products currently developed are for the affluent 1 billion people and give very little attention to environmental issues. As we gear up to serve the needs of the several billion aspiring middle-classes and BoP customers, we are on a path that is environmentally unsustainable. If growth in consumption rates continues at its present pace, we could literally destroy the natural systems‚ soils, watersheds, fisheries, forests, and climate‚ that underpin all economic activity, and indeed, human existence.

MISSION

The mission of the Indian Institute for Sustainable Enterprise is to dramatically increase the number and success of intrapreneurs and entrepreneurs focused on socially inclusive and environmentally sustainable business development for the 21st century. We aim to make the Kanakpura campus in Bangalore the hub for these activities, along with field-based affiliates in India and partners around the world.

Technology of Spirituality

A talk by Khurshed Batliwala, director of World Alliance for Youth Empowerment at Ruia College, Mumbai.

With a post graduate in Mathematics from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, Khurshed Batliwala, or Bawa as he is fondly known (a nick name that has stuck from his IIT days) is an extraordinary personality.

In his own words, he decided it was better to teach people meditation and make them happy rather than teach them mathematics and make them miserable and thus chose the unconventional and challenging career path as a faculty member of the Art of Living, sharing the vision of its founder, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, which is to see a smile on every face on the planet.

Women to Win More Government Contracts

Women to Win More Government Contracts Following WTO Agreement

Women entrepreneurs, with full or partial ownership of more than a third of global businesses, win just 1 percent of government contracts, according to Patricia Francis, executive director of the International Trade Centre.

The disparity is particularly pronounced in developing countries, although women in rich economies also get a disproportionately small share of such contracts, according to the ITC, the Geneva-based joint agency of the WTO and the United Nations. While 5 percent of federal contracts worth about $30 billion were to be allocated to female business owners in the U.S. last year, the actual number fell short of that figure.

Random thoughts for 2012

And on this February Saturday, for the coming year, or whatever is left of it, a few random thoughts, bits of advice with loads of optimism, all my own work.
That it is now obvious that the economic downturn is over and a new dawn looms over the horizon, irrespective of the election results. Not that other state elections have ever affected Mumbai economy anyways. If  you are thinking of starting a new business, the best time is now. And if you are already in a business – it is time to re-invent and rejuvenate yourself.

That in this new age, entrepreneurs have to work smart not hard. Like I always say, there is no need to push against the wall, when all you need is to just find the door.

I often tell my son, don’t keep looking for new ideas. Old ideas, implemented differently, often reap rich dividends. Google was a whopping success inspite of there being many search engines in the fray.

And one should have a life plan before your business plan. Of what use is your business if you do not plan your life ahead.

Always under-promise and over-deliver – the product or service you deliver will have a price, but the look on the faces of your customers will be priceless !

My wife then put in a word – one should be ready at all times – who knows your father-in-law’s favorite nephew’s wife’s cousin may be your next customer. Be always ready with your one-liner or one -minuter. Everytime a person walks away from you – he should say “Wow”.

And my friend on the fifty-first floor bragged – if a person says it cannot be done, it is his way of saying he cannot do it. Believe in yourself and persevere with your goals. How do you think I reached the fifty-first floor ? And that too without a lift for the first 2 years, till my building was declared legal !

At this point, my dog, Teddy the terrier, chipped in – what is the use of all the hard work you are recommending ? You just need to bribe your way around – earn more and save more. But then dogs will be dogs.

And I continue – Don’t get fooled by people who say it will need tons of money and you won’t ever get it. Show me an innovative plan and I will show you the money for it. Look at sites like www.investmentnetwork.in and www.indianangelnetwork.com. Someone’s getting funded every hour – why not you ?

That you should find your own rock – find someone who believes in you and your dreams, talk to him often and draw inspiration

And this final point of view, inject humor in whatever you do. No matter if the world laughs at you, keep smiling – it will make them wonder what you are upto !

Mark Zuckerberg’s 6 Ingredients For Success

Leadership guru Warren Bennis asked whether leaders are born or made. When asked if Wall Street would accept a young Mark Zuckerberg in his early 20s as CEO, Facebook investor Peter Thiel said: “Well, we’ll wait until he’s over 25 to file”.  Wise move, considering that Mark’s title on his business cards read “I’m CEO, bitch”.

This week Facebook filed its S-1 to go public.  Mark is 27.  How Mark managed to launch a social networking site after Friendster had crashed during MySpace’s zenith has been widely chronicled.  What’s been less discussed is how Mark mastered the six requirements to succeed, namely Ambition, Vision, Determination, Execution, Luck and Timing.

Marketing

Marketing tips for SMEs

Marketing is an extremely important function in any business – more so for a Small and Medium Enterprise (SME). But then it is very challenging too – both in terms of the media to be used and the cost at which you can achieve a widespread awareness and recall for your product or service. Let’s see how SMEs cope with these challenges and achieve higher spread at the least cost.

  • Referrals – this is the simplest and most powerful medium of getting new business. Ask your existing customers to refer you to their friends. Some will do it on their own, proactively, while some others will refer you only when asked by someone else. Both types of referrals are extremely valuable since more than half your job is already done by the referer. Trust, which is a vital part of any sale,  is already built and you just need to agree on the commercial terms. You may like to reward your existing customers for a successful referral, to encourage them to refer more, or you may just like to send in a thank-you note. Remember to acknowledge and thank the referer always.

  • Social Media – Use the Social Media effectively to widen your reach. When using Social Media, be careful not to publicize your product or service aggressively. Promote yourself by being an expert on the subject and offering to help. The more your family and friends perceive you to be an expert in your chosen field, the more likely they are going to do business with you. Use Facebook, LinkedIn and your own personalised blogs to spread the word. Use these media intelligently, to drive the traffic to your own website.

  • Visibility –  Here again, the idea is to promote yourself as an expert. Join a Chamber of Commerce or a Trade Association or a Networking Group and participate actively in its activities. Speak on the topics of your interest e.g. if you are in the Plastics Field, you can join a Plastic Manufacturers Association and give lectures, submit papers and lobby for the industry, which will get you quoted in Trade and General newspapers and magazines. Write articles in Magazines and Newspapers. The more you are known as a Plastics expert, the more people will turn to you for business.

  • Retain Customers – It is much more difficult and costly to get new customers as against retaining your existing customers. Pamper them, handle them with care and give them a bit more than their money’s worth. Implement a good Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system to follow up on leads, service and outstandings. Wish them on special occasions. Do all that you do for your family and they will be a part of your family and will stay with you for life.

  • Mailing Lists – Use mailing lists sensibly. Send mailers to your customers, friends, prospects and relatives. Pass on information selectively about the trends in your industry, new developments, etc. Use the 80-20 rule – Talk about your industry 80% and your own brand 20%. Mailers should not be too frequent and boring to be deleted on the spot, nor too far apart for the receiver to lose interest. Mailers should be made so interesting and valuable that the addressees should be looking forward to receiving the next one !

  • Advertising ? Advertising is one of the most costly and least remunerative methods of promoting yourself. In current times, owing to media clutter, the reader involuntarily switches his mind off the ads and relies more on recommendations and referrals. However, if you need to cast the net wide and your target audience is well identified with a particular medium, you may just want to try it out.

  • Be Ready – Above all, be ready with a brief overview of your business and its need. In a social meeting with friends or unknown people, if someone asks  you – “What do you do and how can I help you ?” you should be ready with a 60 second pitch about yourself, your product / service, your immediate past achievements and your current needs. Keep practicing this pitch over and over – it should not sound rushed (don’t try and pack 5 minutes of info in 60 seconds ! ), but should be clear and concise.

Most of the above does not involve any heavy investment in terms of money. But they do require time to plan and execute effectively. Here again use the 80-20 principle – plan 80% and execute 20%, and you will reap rich rewards. Happy Marketing !
