Change your typeface, save millions

CNN) — An e. You can write it with one fluid swoop of a pen or one tap of the keyboard. The most commonly used letter in the English dictionary. Simple, right?

Now imagine it printed out millions of times on thousands of forms and documents. Then think of how much ink would be needed.

OK, so that may have been a first for you, but it came naturally to 14-year-old Suvir Mirchandani when he was trying to think of ways to cut waste and save money at his Pittsburgh-area middle school.

It all started as a science fair project. As a neophyte sixth-grader at Dorseyville Middle School, Suvir noticed he was getting a lot more handouts than he did in elementary school.

The ŠKODA Prize for Indian Contemporary Art

FIRST PRIZE –  Rs. 10,00,000

RUNNER’S UP (2 PRIZES) – A 4-week residency in Switzerland, courtesy Pro Helvetia, The Swiss Arts Council

The ŠKODA Prize for Indian Contemporary Art was designed and developed as our deliberate attempt to create one of the world’s great art prizes.

The justification for producing a world class, contemporary art prize was simple. The ŠKODA Prize exists to showcase all of India’s exhibiting artists on a single platform – as a single snapshot in time. It exists to uproot and publicize new talent, and to create new heroes of Indian art. It exists to provide a single, annual focal point for Indian and International collectors, galleries, museums, dealers and institutions to follow and chart the story of Indian contemporary art. Finally, and in my mind at least, it is a window for the outside world to see in to a modern India that is carrying the weight of its history into a challenging 21st Century.

Getting more for less

Engineer RA Mashelkar shares three stories of ultra-low-cost design from India that use bottom-up rethinking, and some clever engineering, to bring expensive products (cars, prosthetics) into the realm of the possible for everyone. His take on the Nano, Gandhian Engineering and getting more for less are indeed thought provoking.
