Your idea could revolutionize farming in India!

Here is your chance to get your bright and green idea implemented! To push for renewable energy and its application, Greenpeace has come up with an Innovation Challenge. We are looking for designs for a renewable energy powered irrigation pump to help farmers in Bihar.

Currently, the farmers are using diesel pumps to irrigate their farm lands. But rising diesel prices are making the operational cost of existing pumps expensive. The need for a new design is urgent which is more sustainable. Solar pumps do exist, but have a number of issues: they’re expensive, fragile, easily stolen, and viewed as unproven.

Imagine a pump which can solve these issues! To facilitate the idea of an alternative pump design, we’re hosting a challenge that’s a little different from most engineering competitions. The process is transparent: as soon as a design is submitted it’s open to the public and other entrants to review. Participants get feedback from experts in the field and the opportunity to iterate on their design in a real-world scenario.

Prize

30,000 Euros prize money under all categories and a chance to work with us to prototype their concept in farmers fields in India!

The challenge starts on September 3 and runs for 10 weeks. More information is available at http://www.greenpeacechallenge.org

We look forward to your participation! Spread the word in your networks, institutions, colleges and workplaces.

We need smart design ideas to make irrigation clean, viable and affordable!

Karl Mehta’s app for Social Change

Filthy Streets? Truant Teachers? Karl Mehta’s Got an App for That

Shortly after the ravaging Hurricane Sandy hit the East Coast heavily last year leaving an estimated $68 billion of damage in its wake, San

Francisco Bay Area venture capitalist Karl Mehta was at the White House and heard government agencies, such as FEMA, come together with companies like Google to rebuild the area and provide for its victims.

“This gave me first-hand insight as to how a combination of the public and private sectors could come together to manage these types of situations,” Mehta told reporters in a teleconference with the India media Aug. 15, shortly after launching the initiative “Code for India.”

The unique initiative aims to gather 1 million software engineers from throughout the world who will volunteer for eight hours a month to develop mobile applications that address India’s most-pressing needs.

“It’s better than someone handing you an $80 million check,” said Mehta, noting that the project has a potential value of $800 million per month. “Code for India” will focus on issues in education; health and sanitation; food and water; and entrepreneurship. The project develops solutions based on citizen input: “If you see a problem and think there should be a solution, type it into our wiki, and thousands of engineers will work on it,” said the Mountain View-based Mehta, adding that he already has a team of 300 volunteers, many from Google, Facebook, and Amazon.

TheFunTheory.com

This site is dedicated to the thought that something as simple as fun is the easiest way to change people’s behaviour for the better. Be it for yourself, for the environment, or for something entirely different, the only thing that matters is that it’s change for the better. Use it at work, at home or just for fun !

The Play Belt

Can we ensure everyone keeps their safety belt on by making it fun to do? This is another of the ideas that made it to the final of the fun theory award, created by Nevena Stojanovic from Serbia. The idea is being tested in Sweden in the hope it could be applied to all vehicles in the future.

The Speed Camera Lottery

The winning idea of the fun theory award, submitted by Kevin Richardson, USA. Can we get more people to obey the speed limit by making it fun to do? This was the question Kevin’s idea answered and it was so good that Volkswagen, together with The Swedish National Society for Road Safety, actually made this innovative idea a reality in Stockholm, Sweden.
