The Skoll Awards for Social Entrepreneurship support social entrepreneurs whose work has the potential for large-scale influence on critical challenges of our time: tolerance and human rights, health, economic and social equity, peace and security, institutional responsibility, and environmental sustainability. These issues are at the heart of the foundation’s vision of empowering people to create a peaceful, prosperous, sustainable world. Within these issues, we are particularly interested in applications from social entrepreneurs working in five critical sub-issue areas that threaten the survival of humanity – climate change, nuclear proliferation, pandemics, conflict in the Middle East and water scarcity.
The Skoll Awards provide later-stage, or mezzanine, funding, subject to payment limitations described below under Budget Guidance. In most cases, the grant is provided for core support to help organizations expand their programs and capacity to deliver long-term, sustainable equilibrium change. The Skoll Awards are not intended for new or early-stage programs or initiatives. Programs submitted for consideration should have a track record of no less than three years. In addition to core support, the Skoll Foundation supports the participation of Award recipients in the annual Skoll World Forum on Social Entrepreneurship.

General Meeting on July 24, 2009
Some excerpts :
A UNDP Report prepared a few years ago, pointed out that 10% of the richest adults in the world own as much as 85% of the world’s household wealth, while the bottom 50% have to contend with only 1% of household wealth.
It now takes the Earth one year and four months to regenerate resources used in a single year. And if this continues apace, the equivalent of two Earths will be needed to support humanity’s resource requirements by mid 2030s. The current global economic model is therefore clearly unsustainable.
…..a competitive low carbon strategy of growth will also have to generate incremental employment and livelihoods. Therefore, for Indian business, this new paradigm of competitiveness will not only require the creation of “green businesses”, but also the generation of “green livelihoods”.
Innovation, Incentivisation and Inclusiveness hold the key to crafting this new dimension of competitiveness.

The key is to try to infiltrate rather than seek to invade people’s minds. This means going beyond the conventional – the so-called ‘unconventional’ brand communication methods. Events, promotions, and in-store activities are all great channels of communication, but are also getting overcrowded. The challenge is to reach out to people in a highly cost-effective way beyond these channels….. Click here for more
Over 30 products were given the top award in the International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) 2009, organized by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA). These ranged from innovative heavy-duty equipment to complex medical systems. The emphasis was on creating an appropriately user-friendly experience, whether that user is a veteran warehousing professional or a seasoned clinician. The Best in Show title was awarded to a company that is working hard to exorcise its past demons: Nike (NKE) won for its Trash Talk basketball shoe, made entirely from recycled materials.
